We were heading home in the brisk autumnal evening after an all day ride in the Colorado Rockies when I heard something for the first time in my life. It is rare, and it instantly seized my imagination and haunted my thoughts. It was an elk bugling. It is his mating call and it floats for miles over valleys. I was trying to imagine what he looked like in the gathering dusk with his breath condensing as he called to another.
