About Jill Westbrook
Parts of my story are integral to why I do what I do, what motivates me and the emotions and ideas I am trying to convey through my work.
CS Lewis said, in Till We Have Faces...
The sweetest thing in all my life has been the longing, to reach the Mountain, to find the place where all the beauty came from, my country, the place where I ought to have been born. Do you think it all meant nothing, all the longing...The longing for home...For indeed it now feels not like going, but like going back.
My mother told people the first thing I ever drew was a horse before I was three in the dust on the kitchen floor of the little white clapboard parsonage in the North Woods of Wisconsin.
In 1963, our family took a trip Out West to Vancouver, BC, stopping at Rocky Mountain National Park, Yellowstone, Glacier National Park, and a place in SE Washington state called Horse Heaven Hills which disappointingly, held not one horse. To salve my dissolution my mother asked if could picture
all those wild horses out there. I could.
That trip burned into me a longing to return to my Heart Home, the Rocky Mountains and the West, home of the cowboy, the wild horse and vistas that set in me a desire I could not fathom but tried to fill by drawing and painting the things that called to my soul.
In Fall of 2019 my wonderful husband of 40 years retired and told me to start looking. I knew what he meant and by May of 2020 we had purchased a cabin just outside of Westcliffe, Colorado. But we as began our new life of exploring the mountains, I lost him forever in June of 2021, until we meet again on the other side. We had just passed the 41 year mark of our long and amazing marriage. Friends and family said...
He got you home to Colorado before he had to go. I miss him every minute.
John Eldredge said in his book, The Journey of Desire.. It seems hard to believe that we could add anything to the splendor God creates, but that is exactly what we are designed for and what our future involves. So I paint and draw the things I love of this earth, the West, moments and things which are winsome and soul-piercing encounters along this adventure called LIFE.
May He bless the trail you ride on today. Isaiah 58.14
